Collection versus delivery: compare the cost you will actually pay

Use your travel and delivery figures. A lower item price can disappear in a separate journey.

Set the same purchase on both sides

Compare the same platform, edition, format and seller conditions. A code package and a confirmed disc are not equivalent merely because their prices are close. If one option includes a component you will not use, separate that value instead of treating the bundle price as automatic savings. The comparison becomes meaningful only after the offered access is suitable for the intended account and console.

Count the additional journey

Use the extra travel expense caused by this purchase: fare, fuel estimate you choose, parking or another direct charge. If you already make the trip, its additional cost may be small. If you cross a large city only to collect the item, it may be substantial. Keep a fuel or time value labelled as your estimate; the tool should not manufacture a local rate. A trip that visits three speculative stores is a different plan from collecting one confirmed order.

Count delivery without inventing it

Take the delivery charge and proposed date from the actual checkout. Include mandatory charges that change the total. A retailer’s general free-delivery banner can have conditions and may not cover your selected address or item. For delivery to a hotel or shared address, check whether the handover works. A nominally inexpensive service can be unsuitable if it arrives after you leave or requires a recipient who will not be there.

Keep time outside the cash total unless you choose a value

The simplest cash comparison is item plus delivery against item plus additional travel. Time is a separate trade-off. If you decide to give it a monetary value, write the assumption explicitly so the result does not look like a factual price. Someone who enjoys an existing shopping trip can reasonably choose collection even when a parcel is slightly cheaper. Someone with a narrow lunch break may reach the opposite conclusion.

An illustrative comparison

Suppose the same item costs 80 in both routes, delivery costs 5 and your additional travel expense is 9. The cash totals are 85 for delivery and 89 for collection. These are example inputs, not GTA 6 prices or local travel rates. If collection joins an existing journey and adds only 1, the total becomes 81. Changing the travel assumption changes the decision; it does not prove that one method is universally better. Use the editable trip card to keep your real figures with the chosen route.

Define the comparable item first

Write the platform, edition, format and seller on both sides of the calculation. Comparing a code in a box with a disc can make a cash difference look meaningful when the access is different. A marketplace listing also needs the seller and fulfilment method, not just the site name. Only after the product matches should you add delivery, travel and any mandatory charges.

Measure the extra trip, not the whole day

If the shop is already on your route, count only the additional fare, fuel, parking or other direct cost caused by the purchase. If you are travelling only to collect, record the full incremental journey. Keep time as a separate choice unless you deliberately assign it a value. This keeps an enjoyable existing errand from looking falsely expensive and makes a dedicated cross-city trip visible.

Use a sensitivity check

Change one assumption at a time. If delivery is 5 and the additional trip is 9, collection costs four more before valuing time. If the trip adds only 1 because you are already nearby, collection costs four less. Record the source of each number and replace examples with checkout evidence. A result that changes when the travel estimate changes is a decision aid, not a universal price claim.

Put the decision into a purchase trip card, or choose a destination in US Cities, UK Cities or Other Markets.
